Logic Meets Logistics

Controlling the where, when, and how factors affecting parts and materials is one of the most critical – and resource-intensive – elements in the manufacturing and assembly process. Piston Group’s unmatched expertise ensures that materials and parts are precisely where they’re needed, when they’re needed – and that they arrive in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.

Phases, gates and getting it done.

Piston Group provides comprehensive ongoing management of supply chains after launch. Change management, quoting, internal communications and managing equipment modifications are included as part of this service.

Effective supply chain management requires an approach that is consistent, thorough, and systematic. Our Phase Gate Process is a precisely engineered tool that helps team members’ focus on critical elements needed for a successful product launch. Each project is subdivided into a logical structure of phases and gates to ensure that requirements are met at all key junctures. Open communication, clearly established deliverables, requirement checklists, individual and team ownership of outcomes, and full engagement of team members provide the framework for consistently outstanding performance.

Making a material difference.

Through advanced technology and robust process, Piston Group standardizes material management to ensure that we have the right material at the right time to meet customer requirements. Daily and weekly customer releases are processed through our EDI and MRP systems to translate part delivery requirements to our global supply base. Inbound component shipments are electronically tracked, and parts are validated upon arrival at our docks, dynamically updating inventory systems. Inventory data is continuously monitored electronically via integration to all customer systems. Integrated shipping applications communicate with MRP systems to generate automatic advanced shipping notifications and relieve inventory, with outbound shipments electronically tracked.

The most important part is quality.

Our teams work diligently to continuously ensure not one, but two sets of quality standards: Yours and ours. Quality teams at both the corporate and plant level maintain adherence to quality standards, managing advanced supplier quality development throughout the product development and manufacturing processes. Particular attention is paid to high impact and critical suppliers; these are identified and closely monitored, with performance tracked using a supplier scorecard system. Plant quality teams focus upon preventing, identifying, and containing any supplier quality defects, rapidly identifying any emergent problems.

It is a small world after all.

Piston Group routinely manages a global logistics network transporting nearly $1 billion of materials; materials that are delivered on time and at the lowest possible cost. Select third-party logistics providers work closely with our in-house logistics specialists, working with all modes of transportation. Our teams manage shipping regulations, hazardous materials handling, customs and other considerations across North America, Asia, and Europe. Freight lanes are continuously monitored and modified to ensure high efficiency coupled with the lowest possible cost. Specialists negotiate optimal carrier pricing across truck, rail, sea, and air.

Adding value at every step in the process.

An optimally packaged component is one that travels safely at the lowest possible cost, and which can be quickly unpacked at its destination. Piston Group packaging design and engineering specialists thoroughly analyze component and finished product designs as well as shipping requirements to develop, design, and source packaging solutions to meet our customer demanding requirements. Our teams use all packaging types, ranging from conventional totes and returnable knockdowns to customers’ proprietary complex steel and hybrid material racks. We consistently succeed in preventing product damage during shipping while optimizing package density to minimize shipping costs.
