Vinnie Johnson formed Piston Automotive, located in the heart of the Detroit Empowerment Zone, in 1995.

Piston Automotive’s original scope of products and services included: corrugated pallet manufacturing, product repackaging and plastic returnable containers and steel rack management.

Automotive suspension module assembly and sequencing operations began at the Michigan Avenue facility in March of 1996. The following month, the Fullerton Avenue sequencing, containerization and logistics center was opened.

Since its' inception, Piston Automotive has formed several joint ventures with Tier 1 supplier's. These joint ventures have assembled and sequenced interior, suspension and chassis modules.

In 2005, the Piston Group was honored by the Initiative For A Competitive Inner City (ICIC) and Inc. magazine as a recipient of the Inner City 100 award, a national competition to find and rank fast-growing companies in inner cities across America.

The Piston Group was the No. 1 minority-owned company and ranked No. 5 overall out of the 100 awarded companies that were selected out of the 4,500 nominated companies.

The Piston Group was recognized as a growing business in one of America’s cities that is “transforming the urban landscape across the nation.” Piston Group was again honored by ICIC in 2006 as the #2 company overall on the list of 100 Inner City Companies.

Additionally, Piston Group Chairman Vinnie Johnson was the feature cover story in the 2005 June issue of Inc. magazine, a leading publication for growing companies and entrepreneurs with a circulation of more than two million.
